Samothraki is a wild sanctuary. The journey requires intention, but the destination is profound. Follow these routes to find your way.

The Golden Rule: Head to Alexandroupoli

No matter where you start in Greece, your first goal is the Port of Alexandroupoli. From there, you will take the Ferry boat directly to Samothraki island. The ferry takes roughly 2 hours.

  • Board the official shuttle at Asprovalta Camping.

  • Board the ferry to Samothraki (Boarding pass purchased separately on-site).

A beautiful, straightforward drive across Northern Greece.

  • Merge onto Egnatia Odos (A2/E90) heading East toward Kavala and Xanthi.
  • Continue straight until the Alexandroupoli exit.
  • Follow signs to the Port (approx. 2.5 hours total driving time).
Public Transport (Backpackers)

For the solo adventurers utilizing the local KTEL bus network.

  • Take a local bus or taxi from Asprovalta to the nearest main KTEL hub (Kavala).
  • Catch the KTEL bus from Kavala to Alexandroupoli. Tickets
  • Walk 15 minutes from the Alexandroupoli bus station to the ferry port.

The Northern Gateway

By Car

A fast and entirely highway based route across Thrace.

  • Get on Egnatia Odos (A2/E90) heading East.
  • Drive for roughly 3.5 hours directly to Alexandroupoli.
  • Park at the port or bring your car on the ferry (book vehicle tickets well in advance).
By Train

A relaxed rail journey connecting the major hubs of Northern Greece.

  • Depart from Thessaloniki Passenger Railway Station.
  • Take the train heading East toward Alexandroupoli. Tickets
  • Arrive at Alexandroupoli station, located conveniently near the ferry port.
By Bus

The most frequent and popular method for local travelers.

  • Head to the Macedonia Intercity Bus Station (KTEL Makedonias) in Thessaloniki.
  • Buy a direct ticket to Alexandroupoli. Buses depart multiple times daily and take about 4 hours. Tickets
  • Arrive in Alexandroupoli and walk to the port to catch your ferry.

The Southern Route

Origin: Athens

Fastest Option
By Air

Skip the massive cross-country drive and fly directly to the port city.

  • Fly from Athens International Airport (ATH) to Alexandroupoli Airport (AXD). Flights take about 1 hour.
  • Take a 15 minute taxi from the airport to the ferry port.
  • Board the ferry to Samothraki.
By Train

A scenic journey through the mainland of Greece, perfect for a slower pace.

  • Take the train from Athens (Larissa Station) to Thessaloniki Train Station. Tickets
  • Transfer to the regional train or intercity bus service heading to Alexandroupoli.
  • This is the longest trip listed on this page. Over 12 hours in total.
By Car

A heavy driving mission recommended only if you want a proper Greek road trip.

  • Take the A1 National Road North towards Thessaloniki.
  • Merge onto Egnatia Odos (A2/E90) heading East to Alexandroupoli.
  • Total driving time is approximately 8.5 to 9 hours. Plan for rest stops.
By Bus

A long haul journey for the dedicated pilgrim.

  • Go to Kifissos Bus Station in Athens.
  • Catch the KTEL bus to Alexandroupoli (often requires a connection in Thessaloniki). Tickets
  • Prepare for a 10+ hour bus ride before reaching the ferry port.
